Punjab Schools Timings Changed Amid Rising Smog Levels

Published:

In response to the alarming increase in smog levels, the Punjab government has announced a change in school timings across the province. Lahore, consistently ranked among the world’s most polluted cities, has seen its air quality index (AQI) soar to dangerous levels, prompting immediate action to safeguard the health of students and staff.

Current Air Quality Situation

The air quality index in Lahore has reached a staggering 406, with certain areas recording even higher levels. For instance, the AQI in Defense Phase 8 is a concerning 624, while areas like Ferozepur Road and Gulberg are at 447. The air quality readings in Thokar Niaz Baig, WAPDA Town, and Johar Town are also above the acceptable limits, raising serious health concerns for residents, particularly children and the elderly.

New School Timings

Effective from October 28, 2024, and continuing until January 31, 2025, schools will commence educational activities no earlier than 8:45 AM. In an effort to minimize exposure to outdoor pollution, all morning assemblies will be held inside classrooms. The Punjab Education Department has also mandated the suspension of all outdoor activities during this period.

Health and Safety Guidelines

The Punjab Environment Protection Department has issued strict guidelines for parents and students to follow during this hazardous period. It is advised that children wear masks and utilize protective measures when outdoors. Additionally, families are encouraged to use the Environment Protection Department’s mobile app for daily air quality updates.

Citizens are urged to limit unnecessary travel and outdoor activities, especially those involving vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.

Additional Measures

To further combat the pollution crisis, a complete ban on fireworks will be enforced in Lahore until January 31, 2025. Authorities will also seize smoke-emitting vehicles, motorcycles, rickshaws, and buses to reduce emissions in the city.

Public Cooperation Required

Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb has appealed to the public to report any instances of smoke emissions to the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) by calling 1373. She emphasized the importance of ensuring vehicle fitness to prevent further increases in air pollution.

As Lahore grapples with severe air pollution, the adjustment of school timings reflects the government’s commitment to protecting the health of its citizens. Parents and students are encouraged to stay informed and adhere to safety measures to navigate these challenging conditions. By working together, the community can help mitigate the impact of smog on health and well-being during this critical time.
