Lahore tops global pollution list, Karachi ranks fifth
According to the latest Air Quality Index (AQI) data, Lahore has been ranked as the world’s most polluted city, with New Delhi in second place and Karachi in fifth.
Lahore recorded a hazardous particulate matter (PM) level of 298, while New Delhi registered 247 PM and Karachi 173 PM, highlighting severe pollution levels in these urban areas.
The alarming air quality in Lahore and Karachi has raised serious health concerns, as high PM levels are linked to respiratory and other critical health issues. The cities, particularly during winter months, struggle with smog, which exacerbates pollution.
In response to the deteriorating air quality, the Punjab government has relaxed some restrictions. Construction activities have been allowed to resume in Lahore and three other districts, including Gujranwala, Multan, and Faisalabad.
Public and private offices are now permitted to operate at full capacity. However, restrictions on heavy traffic remain, with entry into these districts allowed only from Monday to Thursday, while weekends see stricter limitations.
Additional measures remain in place to curb pollution, such as closing markets and shopping malls by 8 pm. Restaurants can offer indoor and outdoor dining until 10 pm, but barbecue setups must use hood systems to prevent environmental smoke pollution.
While these eased restrictions provide some relief to businesses and residents, the government is closely monitoring the air quality and implementing measures to control pollution, such as regulating heavy traffic and enforcing early business closures.
