Nitanshi Goel gained immense popularity for her role in “Laapataa Ladies”, impressing everyone with her incredible performance at the mere age of 17. Recently, the actress opened up about her acting process for emotional scenes in the film, revealing that she Googled crying videos of Deepika Padukone, Kiara Advani, and Alia Bhatt to study and learn how to cry on-screen.
In a recent conversation at the Best Performances Female 2024 panel with Zoom, Nitanshi Goel discussed the challenges she faced while portraying her role as Phool in “Laapataa Ladies”. She shared an instance from the film, revealing that an important breakdown sequence was not initially part of the script. However, she took the initiative to have it added, making the scene more emotional, which she felt was crucial for her character.
She said, “Scene meh tha ki woh raat ko kho gayi hai and subhe woh uthti hai and then she looks into the mirror at herself, and then she leaves. But I was like, nahi, nahi, nahi. Phool is very vulnerable, and she has to cry at some point.”
Nitanshi believed crying was a crucial aspect of her character, and that if she could cry convincingly, people would appreciate her as an actor. She was determined to nail the sequence. However, despite being convinced that the scene was necessary and that she could perform it, she found it difficult.
The actress shared that the film’s director, Kiran Rao, supported her and assured her they could redo the scene later if necessary. This trust fueled her determination to give her best, and she spent the night preparing for it in a unique way.
Goel used the internet to search for crying scenes of Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, and Kiara Advani from their films, closely studying them to learn. Additionally, she sought tips from their acting process to learn from the best.
“I wanted the breakdown to look very amazing! Fir subhe subhe maine do teen emotional songs sune aur kaha Jai Mata Di.” (In the morning I heard 2-3 emotional scenes and went for it.) Her efforts paid off as Nitanshi immersed herself so deeply in the scene that Rao had to intervene and make her stop.
Kiran Rao directed “Laapataa Ladies”, and Aamir Khan Productions produced it. The film featured Sparsh Shrivastava, Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Ravi Kishan in significant roles.
